Boris and The Melvins Brought the "Twins of Evil" Tour to St. Andrewβs Hall
Boris and The Melvins at Saint Andrews Hall in Detroit was a treat for me being I was obliterated on dabs and in a really good mood knowing the next day I would be flying to California. That type of energy should be able to be bottled! It made shooting so relaxing, for the first time ever. Usually, I am anxious and trying to keep myself focused. Luckily I was able to just enjoy myself and photograph the sets and feel special. Knowing Nirvana played this room is a big deal for most of us right? So to have anyone that is connected to them come here and play in the same room, is a pretty big deal. This all plays into my theory that
Time Is A Circle Pit.

I decided to go all Black and white for this show and I think it worked in my favor. I am honestly not a fan of most lighting nowadays. Few will get me to put out massive amounts of color photos. I am more likely to do it with daytime outdoor photos than hall or theatre concerts. Just how it is. These two bands are all photogenic as hell and for playing slower tempos than the punk, hardcore, and death metal shows I usually photograph, it was such a welcomed change of pace.
The Melvins played βBullheadβ and Boris played βHeavy Rocks, both in their entirety. If you ever get a chance to see either of these bands, do not skip. It is a trip.

To Dream Is To Cream⦠The Only Sherburt Ever is Here.
Hello, it is me, your friend Sherburt. For the last 5 years, I have been running a website called I Like Their Old Stuff. I have covered everything from Movement Festival to Slayerβs Last Michigan Show to Local Gigs with 10 people in attendance. Over the years I always dreamed of getting past this stage of blogging or content creation and just making art without any kind of guidelines or pigeon holding by artist PR. Welp, this is a free-for-all. People can tell me in emails what their expectations are but the truth is, I have no desire to create for a person who answers emails. I am making art for me. I am making art for the fans of the bands. And I am making art for the bands. This has been an issue for me especially starting last year. I have to keep up these fucking appearances like I am a functioning media outlet when the truth is Iβm one human being on my own. I donβt have a team. Nor do I want one. Cue some uplifting Drum and Bass music please I need itβ¦
Oh wait, did you think I was kidding about cueing the Drum and Bass music? I wasnβt. I can now be myself. Which means my humor will come out more than ever. So will my Junglist side. So will my politically driven side. So will my party animal side. I am so over faking-the-fucking-funk. So letβs get it! No use wasting more time!
So what was the problem?
Freedom. It just didnβt feel like I was free at all. I felt like I was just trying to get things to happen by forcing them. I realized I like making art in digital form with the photos I take and implementing video or written word or spoken word. I realized I was tired of the regular blog format and how fucking tiring it all is to try to keep up with the Jonesβs.
So what is this site about?
This is my place for free expression. No pigeonholding myself. Sure things might look similar at first, and that may be the point to get you hooked in here. What is to come is so much that I have never created before and I would like this to be the center of all of it. This is now the NEW SITE. This is now THE PORTFOLIO. This is now THE BOOKING SITE. This is now is a Hatebreed song I like a lot. This is also a space where you will be able to order prints from shows directly eventually. You will also be able to see events for Metro Detroit that are in the realm of stuff I cover. Sorry if there is an arena show, unless itβs Green Day or Blink 182 chances are I wonβt be covering it. The big thing is seeing how it goes from a media site to a lifestyle site. This is just now how things are for me. So I want to experiment visually and with audio and written word and design and just different ways to present my work.
This is simply a home base for Sherburt.
What about the Patreon?
Patreon was shifted to www.patreon.com/sherburtphoto and still has over 225 posts and will still be operational! More tiers will be added as time goes on, but all basic posts will still be visible with the $5 a month for life tier. That will never stop! What comes with other tiers will be the ability to donate more, but also giveaways and exclusives like 1-on-1 edit sessions/tutorials and even my own custom presets ripped right from my Lightroom.
What sparked all of this?
Believing I can do more. My achievements last year proved to be the deciding factor in reversing into personal brand and out of the realm of trying to run a site. Becoming NOFXβs live music photographer, getting on the Tied Down Detroit media team, becoming a photographer for the revived Black Iris Booking, and joining the Pleasant Underground media team all led me here. It made me realize I didnβt have to fake the funk anymore with a blog site. I didnβt have to just make it look like I knew what I was doing. I do know what Iβm doing.
I also was faced with a brand new Squarespace editor that I couldnβt use with the old site without transferring to a new one. Instead of having multiple sites up I wanted to narrow inβ¦ and this all came from my Father asking me what my website was and then I said βWhich one?β. If my own Dad a former military networking engineer specialist couldnβt figure that out, then I knew I was in trouble. I had no real recognition of my brands but my alias name Sherburt continues to grow by the day. It makes all the sense in the world finally. And tbh, I wish I wouldβve done this sooner.
So instead of being Sherburt from Time Is A Circle Pit or I Like Their Old Stuffβ¦
I am just Sherburt.
Thank you for coming along with me.
And like a local reggae band, I gotta say BIG TINGZ COMING!
